Designed by Jan van Krimpen, 1929.
Open Kapitalen (Open Capitals) is my favourite display typeface. It is an unusual combination of a strong inscriptional form, and a delicateness that comes from it being an outline typeface rather than a solid one.
The specimen to the right is my own digital revival. As with Romanée, I have done it for my personal use so that I might be able to digitally set what is otherwise an unavailable typeface.
A couple of fine examples from the shelves:
• PHILIP SHARPE ‘IN THE HOUSE OF AUGUSTUS’
MKB Editions, 2012.
Designed and printed by John Grice at Evergreen Press for MKB Editions in an edition of 100 copies.
I only have a couple of examples of this titling typeface in my collection. I think it is shown particularly well on the cover and title page of this slim booklet.
• CHARLOTTE MEW ‘THE TREES ARE DOWN’
Gruffyground Press, 2002.
Designed and printed by Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press for the Gruffyground Press in an edition of 125 copies.
The Open Kapitalen looks most handsome on the title page of this beautifully printed fine press chapbook.
